Purpose:  To determine the position of a third mass and experimentally verify.

Materials:

     3 masses                  meter stick             fulcrum

Procedure:

1. Calculate where a third mass needs to be placed to achieve balance.
2. Place the meter stick on the fulcrum so that its center is at 50.0 cm.
3. Place two assigned masses on the meter stick.
4. Determine where the 100 g mass should be placed to achieve balance.
5. Calculate the percent error.

Results/Data:

500 g mass at center minus __________ cm (assigned by instructor).

200 g mass at center plus __________ cm (assigned by instructor).

100 g mass should be placed at center plus __________ cm (calculated by student).

100 g mass was found to be in rotational equilibrium at __________ cm (experimentally determined).

Percent error: __________
